Sometimes, children are really hungry but dinner isn’t ready, or you got home late, or snack happened somewhere distracting. If you don’t want to or can’t adjust mealtime, offer a tide-me-over. Unlike the planned snack where your child eats until full, this is a little food to hold him over until the meal. It might be frozen peas, cut up cucumber, a few crackers, or a small amount of a safe food. If there has been a lot of mealtime stress, a tide-me-over may feel like a safe space for him to branch out, so consider including a new food. It is fine to serve a tide-me-over at a different spot than the regular mealtime table (such as a child-size table or coffee table). Here is some language to try with a tide-me-over:

“Would you like frozen peas or carrots and ranch* for your tide-me-over?”

“Here’s a tide-me-over—we’ll save some hungry for dinner.”

“Get yourself a small bowl of crackers; dinner will be soon.”

“Here are some grapes; then you can help set the table.”
